Some of these conditions are rare, but they are reasons to seek immediate medical attention for your baby.

  • Fever (rectal temperature >100.4 degrees).  Remember, underarm temperatures are NOT accurate!
  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)
  • Apnea (not breathing)
  • Cyanosis (blue color around lips)
  • Umbilical cord infection (redness spreading on the skin around the cord, sometimes with smelly discharge)
  • Projectile vomiting
  • Diarrhea (normal poop is like mustard)
  • Choking
  • Seizure
  • Any head injury
  • Fall from a height of 2 feet or more
  • Blood in the diaper (except newborn girls can get a false period around day 5-7 and that is normal)
